Meeting Hunger with Compassion
and the Hope of Christ

In communities surrounding Obong Ntak, some widows, orphans, people with disabilities, and others facing serious hardship struggle to obtain enough food.

Food for Body and Soul responds by providing essential food to people in need. This assistance is offered without strings attached—as a tangible expression of Christ’s compassion and an opportunity to share the encouragement and hope of the Gospel.

How Compassion Became a Ministry

As Gospel outreach expanded beyond Obong Ntak, ministry leaders encountered widows and orphans who came to gatherings hungry. Whenever funds could be found, bags of rice and clothing were purchased and shared with those in need.

In November 1999, a visiting mission team met a widowed grandmother who was caring for her one-day-old granddaughter after the baby’s mother had died during childbirth. The grandmother had no money to buy food for the child, so team members gave her the naira they had with them.

When the team returned home, they asked the elders of the Mt. Morris Church of Christ to provide monthly support for food for widows and orphans. Tusculum Church of Christ later joined the effort, and in 2000 the occasional assistance became an organized food program.

Around 2013, the ministry expanded to include people who are blind, people with physical disabilities, and others experiencing severe poverty. Bible distribution also became part of its work, and the ministry became known as Food for Body and Soul.

Food Freely Given. Hope Freely Shared

Food for Body and Soul provides food and practical assistance to church members and people from surrounding communities alike. Help is given freely, without requiring anyone to take part in a religious activity.

These gatherings also create natural opportunities for personal encouragement, Gospel preaching, and Bible distribution—including Bibles in the Efik language. In this way, the ministry responds to immediate physical needs while offering the hope found in Christ.

A Recent Outreach in Action

On Sunday, April 19, 2026, Food for Body and Soul conducted an outreach at the Church of Christ in Obon Odor. Led by Mojima Etokudo, the gathering included participants invited from Obon Odor, Edem Idim, Ikot Enang, and Ikot Odiong.

With support from the Derickson family fund, the outreach provided:
• Three bags of rice
• Two cartons of noodles
• Six Efik-language Bibles
• Financial assistance for widows and orphans
